It is a fortified castle surrounded by a double defensive wall and moats. Its surrounding wall, where one enters crossing the moats by draw bridges, encloses the courtyard, stables, gardens and platform. History has marked this château. From the 12 century, it housed various French kings.

In 1172, Louis 7th stayed there. In the 15th century, it suffered from struggles between the Armagnacs and the Bourguignons. In the 16th century, it was besieged during the religious wars. In July 1713, it was deemed a castle in ruins. During the revolution the castle was converted into an agricultural building.
